Milkbook

Milkbook

I have recently given birth to our second child and as I fold back into the familiar softness of endless feeding, lean in to the familiar dissolving of night and day, as I chart the passing of time through the changing movements and sounds of this new life, the couch, the view to the garden, the jumping toddler, the cushion just out of reach, the half drunk tea on the other side of the house, the lure of the Iphone all become regular daily occurrences.

Milkbook is an evolving body of work. Small pencil drawings are made on paper cut to the size of an Iphone 6. The drawings are done in the time spent breastfeeding, with whatever hand is free at the time. They act as a snapshot of me in relation to the moment.

The work is in response to how often I would reach for my phone during breastfeeding. I so quickly became addicted to scrolling through apps like instagram and facebook, devouring the creative lives of others, investing time and energy in their curated narratives. If I could scroll surely I could draw! So I set about trying to reclaim that time and redirect it towards my practice. At a time when the parameters around my free time, mental spaciousness and creative process where reduced, altered and fragmented it seemed like a far more generous way to sit in relationship to the act of nourishing my baby. Since adopting this new ritual i have noticed how recharged I feel after the shortest reconnection to creative acts of self expression.
